Lately, I have been asking my friends and family to give me some reading advice. Sometimes I just need to feel like I am on vacation while all kids are home and reading does that. The other day we went to our friends' pool and while the kids swam, I lounged and read. Now, who needs to go to the beach? I do, but a day like that will do when I can't. So, I thought that I would share some of my summer reads that have been kindly suggested by my sister Tanya, my friend Cheryl, and others -
I would reccommend all of these books. My favorite has been The Forgotten Garden that my sister, Tanya, suggested. I just finished it yesterday and now I am taking a break from reading for just a bit. Any suggestions for when I start back up?

I loved The Forgotten Garden!
2 books I'd recommend:
The Lace Reader
The Map of True Places
both by Brunonia Barry.
My favorites are some oldies, anything by Edna Ferber or Frances Parkinson Keyes.
Astrid And Veronica by Linda Olsson
The Sky Burial by Xinran Xinran
Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriquez
Reading Lolita In Tehran By Azar Nafsi
Sheltering Sky By Paul Bowles
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
I recently enjoyed all of them. That should get ya started!
If you haven't read it yet, you must read "The Help."
We just read Forgotten Garden for book club a few months ago and I loved it! I also loved The Help as Lise mentioned. I read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, which I've never read before, and Cordelia Underwood - both are good options as well.
Thanks for the ideas. I am just reading fluff right now...one of the Stephanie Plum Series. Pure fluff, easy reads. Some of the subject matter is a little...eh. But the books are funny.
No recommendations off the top of my head but this list (and comments) are a great starting list for me for the summer! Thanks!
when it comes to my turn to choose for book club I'm going to pick 'Life if Pi'. I loved it. It was a toss up between that and 'Like Water for Chocolate'.
I just finished Jeannette Walls' other book, Half Broken Horses, the story of her grandmother. That family is not boring, that's for sure. I highly recommend it, but be sure to read Glass Castles too, if you haven't already!
Ah! lovely list. I was just sorting through a pile books to decide what to bring for a couple days at the beach. I've got an Anna Quindlen, a collection of Irish short stories by an author I'm not familiar with, and a Joyce Carol Oates. I'm going to add some of your titles to a list I keep on my phone for future reading. I've read Tess (Have you read Jude the Obscure?), but not the others. I remember the Glass Castle was recommended a few years back to me. I would also second water for chocolate, reading lolita in tehran, and a tree grows in brooklyn mentioned by others. The Help is a title that keeps coming up from everyone I know so eventually I'll probably check that one out too.
The Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon is fantastic!
I just finished reading, "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society"
LOVED IT!
